DVCNews.com is reporting that construction work on the new Disney Vacation Club villas will create some upcoming closures of specific areas of the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. This will affect both vacationers staying on property and sightseers just stopping in for a quick tour as they ride the monorail around to the Magic Kingdom. Your vacation here will be affected by what activities you plan to pursue while on property.
What if you are staying at the Grand Floridian?
The Main Courtyard Pool will be closed from August 24, 2012 until approximately December of 2012. Significant work is scheduled for the Main Pool including the addition of a zero entry area.
During this closure, the Beach Pool will remain open to guests. This is an excellent pool, and my children rank their slide as one of the best found on any Disney Deluxe Resort property, but now the pool will be more crowded, as this is not an extremely spacious swimming pool.

The Sandy Cove gift shop will be closed August 24, 2012 until approximately December of 2012. See my suggestion below as to where to shop.
If you are dining on property, restaurant closures may pose more of a problem than any other area of your stay or visit at the Grand Floridian.
Narcoosee’s will be closed July 9 through July 22, 2012.
Citricos will be closed July 23 through August 4, 2012.
Beach Pool Bar is currently closed through August 24, 2012.
Mizner’s Lounge is currently closed through July 14, 2012.
Gasparilla Grill will be closed August 24, 2012 until approximately December of 2012.
While the quick service cafe Gasparilla Grill is closed, guests can order quick service food at Mizner’s Lounge and the Beach Pool Bar when they re-open. See my suggestion below as to where to grab a quick bite to eat, if you have the time to ride the monorail around again. If not, the Magic Kingdom has many outstanding quick service restaurants available.
What if you are just making a quick stop for an afternoon of sightseeing?
Construction areas will undoubtedly be blocked off, so your walking tour view may not be as nice as before.
Sandy Cove gift shop will be closed until approximately December 2012, so you will have to pick up your souvenirs elsewhere. My suggestion? Ride the monorail over to the Contemporary Resort, where they have three excellent resort gift shops. Pick up some lunch or your snack in the Contempo Cafe. These are my personal favorite quick service dining and resorts shops anyway.
Remember that refurbishment dates are simply estimates, and these dates are subject to change without notice.
Worried this may put a kink in your deluxe resort plans? Here are several more resort suggestions, all within basically the same price range.
If you are not staying at or visiting the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, well, the good news for you is these construction closures will have little affect on your vacation.
If you are staying on property, be prepared to make meal and swimming adjustments.
If you plan to just stop by for a quick morning or afternoon visit, I would make plans to eat and shop elsewhere, or stop in just to see what all the construction excitement is about.
Thanks for stopping by for a photographical Disney ride, even if this ride is temporarily under construction.
