Mini Bucket List of Tasty Treats

Disney Dole Whip. Disney summer snacks, Disney food, Disney snacks, Dole ice cream

One thing I love to do when planning my next Walt Disney World vacation is to come up with a list of all of the different food and drinks I would like to try on our next trip. It very rarely happens that I can cross them all off and some stay on my list over the course of several trips. There are just so many food locations and so many interesting choices that it seems impossible to try them all. And sometimes it doesn’t always quite make it into our plan or budget. I listen to a lot of different podcasts from week to week, I read a lot of different Disney related blogs, and any time someone mentions a new or interesting food, drink or experience, I immediately plug it into my notes app on my phone. Call it my mini bucket list if you will. My mini bucket list of tasty treats.

It is things like this that help me keep the dream alive while I sit here not so patiently waiting for my next vacation. *sigh*

-Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich at Sleepy Hollow: Truth be told, I just need to visit Sleepy Hollow in general. In fact, I am ashamed to call myself a Walt Disney World fan when I have never even stopped here. Those waffle sandwiches are calling my name too!
-Lapu Lapu at the Tambu Lounge: My friends at the Enchanted Tiki Talk podcast talk about this drink all the time, and I want to know and understand what they are talking about. I want to feel like we are still friends and that I can hang! Now with the addition of Trader Sams, I need to make the Polynesian a priority.
-Truffle Mac n Cheese Hot Dog at Fairfax Fare: Truffle was all I really needed to hear in order to be convinced. It seems I’m always searching to find something good to eat while at the Studios. I plan to give this bad boy a try!
-Sugar Cane Mojito at Dawa Bar: Safari Mike from Jambo Everyone is a big fan. And I’m a big fan of him, so I would imagine I will be a big fan of this. That is, if I can bring myself to not order my signature drink, the margarita!
-Cronut at the Refreshment Port: Located right as you enter the World Showcase in Epcot and head towards Canada, I have always just walked past this place completely oblivious. Then I hear all these rave reviews about this croissant donut, or what they call the cronut. I will not walk past this place again, I can promise you that.
-School Bread at Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe: I don’t even like coconut but I am probably going to need to get this. Because apparently you aren’t a Disney fan unless you’ve tried School Bread.
-Roasted Pork Shank at Gaston’s Tavern: It’s been too busy inside Gaston’s Tavern the last few times we have been by there. But the pork shank has been on my list for a long time.
-Tamarind Margarita at La Cava: La Cava is pretty much my favorite place in Epcot and I’ve experienced maybe one too many margaritas there. But my love of the Blood Orange margarita makes me think I might also love this one.

Princess Half marathon drink, Disney champagne, Epcot Food and Wine

When in France…drink champagne!

-Cream Cheese Pretzel at Fife and Drum: A pretzel…with cream cheese…sounds like my kind of snack.
-Sliced Beef Brisket at Tortuga Tavern: This menu is completely new as of like yesterday and if Tortuga Tavern is open on our next trip, this will be our lunch destination for sure!

Are any of these items on your mini bucket list of tasty treats to try?

Disney Magic Your Way

This article is not about Disney Magic My Way. It is about Disney Magic Your way! What do I mean by that? Well Disney fans are passionate. Sometimes they are too passionate. They will insist that you must stay the same place they stay, wait in line for the same things they wait in line for and eat the same things they eat. If you do not it is implied you are at best doing something wrong. At worst, you may be ruining your vacation!

But what do you do when two Disney lovers disagree? (And when they disagree do they ever disagree!) This article is here to help you figure out that very thing.

Disney magic your way

Disney Magic Your Way

Let’s start by establishing a few very important principles:

  1. There is more than one way to have a great Walt Disney World Vacation
  2. There is no best way that fits everyone.
  3. You want to find what is best for your travel party!

You can find all kinds of lists with titles that run something like “Must Do”. “Best Attractions at Disney”. and “Top Five Disney”.  There are even articles that focus on the worst attractions at Walt Disney World.

There is nothing wrong with articles like that. I encourage you to read them. But read them critically. If someone says the best attraction at Walt Disney World is Toy Story Midway Mania and does not take the time to explain why just file that little piece of advice in the trash can.

I am not saying the author is completely wrong. Obviously to that person it is the best. But unless that person is paying for your vacation their opinion does not count. You are looking for what is best for you! It’s Magic Your Way. Remember that.

What you need are the details. What makes this so great? What makes that so bad? Maybe what the writer thinks is great you will think is terrible. And maybe what you love the author hates.

Let’s take these principles a little farther as we look at where you should stay and which parks you should visit.

Where To Stay

When it comes to where to stay there are two types of hotels, On Property and Off Property. On Property hotels have a lot of benefits that Off Property Hotels do not. But Off Property hotels are normally less expensive (sometimes a lot less expensive!)

Some people swear by the benefits of On Property hotels. Those benefits include getting into parks early or staying late and free transportation to the parks. Those can be great benefits but can you still have a great Walt Disney World trip and stay Off Property? YES you can!

Other people swear by the money you save by staying Off Property. To them the extra hours in the parks and the free transportation are not worth the extra money spent.

So who is right? They both are! They are planning their vacation not yours.

Keep in mind if you decide to stay On Property there are still some decisions to be made. Disney divides its resort hotels into categories ranging from Deluxe Villas to Value. Deluxe Villas offer a lot more space and service. They also are built, decorated and landscaped to immerse you in different times and places from turn of the century Florida to Africa. Value resorts are also heavy on architecture and decorations but lack the elegance of the more expensive resorts.

You have to decide, is it worth the extra money to see a giraffe at breakfast (yes that is possible) or watch Wishes from my balcony or is it just a place to crash.

Which Parks Do You Go To?

Once you have settled the question of where to sleep it is time to determine which parks you want to see. Disney has four theme parks and two water parks.

Each theme park has both its lovers and haters. Take a look at the attractions that each theme park has and compare them to your travel party. Just because someone hates an attraction does not mean you will. The same is true of an attraction someone loves.

The Magic Kingdom has the most attractions and most of the attractions are very kid friendly. Animal Kingdom has been accused of being a zoo. Does that mean if you are taking kids that you have to skip the Animal Kingdom and only do the Magic Kingdom? Depends on your children. Make the decision that suits your family! But do not let someone else decide for you. Remember it is Magic  Your Way!

So Where Should You Stay and Which Parks Should  You Visit?

I don’t know! I don’t know you. If I did I would be glad to make suggestions but that is all they would be. At this point you have two options, do some research or contact an Authorized Disney Vacation planning agency (like the one that sponsors this page!) If you do contact an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner find one that takes time to get to know you, your family and your dreams.

While there may not be a best way to do Disney World there is almost no wrong way to do it either. Just relax the point is to have fun!

Take a Break at La Cava de Tequila

8661333

It was just recently that I had my first experience visiting La Cava de Tequila, a quaint little tequila bar inside of the Mexico pavilion at Epcot. And after visiting, I definitely had to wonder what had taken me so long! I now call this place a hidden gem of Walt Disney World and make sure that I mention it to all of my clients as a “must do” especially if the bar/lounge experience is of interest to them. Although the location is not exactly hidden, it is very easy to walk right past this bar when wandering through the Mexico pavilion and never even know that it was there. There is some great shopping inside, a boat ride with the Three Cabelleros, and a dimly lit intimate restaurant experience so it is hard to believe there could be more to do.

My drink of choice has always been the wonderful delicious amazing margarita. So it was only fitting that I needed to cross this off my Disney bucket list as soon as possible. And cross it off, I did! Not only did I manage to get there and try one of their delicious specialty margaritas, I got to try five different specialty margaritas! Slow down, before you stage an intervention, I did not drink all five and it wasn’t in one setting. My family and I were able to make it to La Cava twice during our trip (and got a seat both times). Each adult in my party made sure to order a different flavor both times so we could then in turn taste the different flavors.

So if are you wondering if a $14 margarita is any better than a margarita from Applebees for $5? The answer is an enormous …. HECK YES!!!!!
Ok so yes I agree, these margaritas are a tad overpriced so it certainly deters you from heavy alcohol consumption. And it’s difficult to justify it when you can get a frozen one outside for considerably less. But I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed every single one that we tried, and the atmosphere just could not be beat. If you can get a table, order some queso or chips and salsa and take a break from the crowds and the heat, it can be a really great memory on your already memory-filled magical vacation. Now that I am in on the secret, I will be returning on each and every trip. I liked it that much.So if you are looking for suggestions and an idea of their offerings, here are the drinks that we tried and my ranking from 1 to 5 in terms of my favorites (1 being my favorite, 5 being my least favorite).

1. Blood Orange – El Mayor premium silver Tequila, orange liqueur, sweet-tart mix of blood orange juice and hibiscus syrup, topped with wild berry foam served on the rocks with hibiscus Himalayan salt rim

2. Wild Passion Fruit – 100% Agave Tequila Reposado, ginger liqueur, passion fruit, mango nectar and fresh lime juice, topped with mango foam, served on the rocks with a hibiscus Himalayan salt rim

3. Cucumber – El Mayor premium silver Tequila, orange liqueur, caramelized pineapple juice, fresh basil, cucumber and agave nectar, served on the rocks with a cactus-lemongrass Himalayan salt rim

4. Pineapple – 100% Agave Tequila Reposado, ginger liqueur, caramelized pineapple nectar, fresh lime juice and agave nectar, served on the rocks with a cactus-lemongrass Himalayan salt rim

5. Avocado – El Mayor premium silver Tequila, melon liqueur, fresh avocado, agave nectar and fresh lime juice, served frozen with a hibiscus Himalayan salt rim

The Blood Orange was hands down my favorite and just delicious. The addition of the wildberry/mango foam gave it such a unique taste and the salt used on each drink really makes a difference as well. At first glance at the menu I wasn’t so sure about the salt, but it had a hot spice to it that really gave a nice kick to the flavors. I contemplated asking for regular salt because I honestly thought I would hate it. I loved it and could not get enough. Cucumber was middle of the road for me. It had more of a refreshing taste than the others and I think the oddness of the flavor choice makes it a must try. Pineapple and Avocado were last for me. Pineapple only because although delicious, I feel I have had drinks of similar taste before at other places and for the price it was not really worth it. Lastly Avocado due mainly to the fact that it was frozen and not on the rocks. I need my margaritas on the rocks! But again, how many places do you go and see an Avocado margarita on the menu? It almost makes it a must try!

La Cava de Tequila is a must do for all Walt Disney World fans, especially those who like to drink tequila. Margaritas are not even the half of it! The bar offers over 200 different tequilas, Mexican beer and wine, and you can even order a tequila flight if tequila tasting is your thing. I can’t be more thrilled that I finally got to experience it after years of traveling to the World. The snacks, drinks, and cozy atmosphere make it such a fun way to get away from the crowds and heat and have a little relaxation.

Quick Service Breakfasts on the Disney Dining Plan

296068 10150356876238417 106657338416 9748099 527435 n 400x239 Quick Service Breakfast: Are there many choices? %tag

By Melissa L.

With so many people taking advantage of the free Disney Dining Plan promotions each year, a lot of questions seem to pop up about counter service options in Walt Disney World.  Breakfast seems to be the most sought after quick meal (and I don’t blame you, I love to eat but I don’t let food come between me and my park time either)!

I find that it is much easier to snack a breakfast than to grab a quick service one, as aside from food courts the best options tend to be bakeries that offer muffins and other pastries that can utilize snack credits.  You can also get coffee, tea, juice, and water here.  In the long run it may work in your favor to “snack” breakfasts and save your counter service credits for bigger meals!

Here’s a quick overview of counter service stops in the parks:

Magic Kingdom – Main Street Bake Shop is my fave choice for breakfast here.  Currently there are no quick service breakfasts offered at the Magic Kingdom restaurants, however, snacking one of the tempting selections here is a great choice (and this may change with the opening of the new Fanstasyland expansion)!

Epcot – Boulangerie Patisserie in World Showcase is my fave choice and they offer both snack and quick service options for all meals.  You can also grab a quick service breakfast at Electric Umbrella and  Sunshine Seasons in Future World.

Hollywood Studios – Starring Rolls is not only your best choice in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, its the only breakfast-offering stop!

Animal Kingdom – Kusafiri Coffe Shop or Tamu Tamu Refreshments are your best choice here, although both take snack credits and not counter service ones and the menus do change.

Don’t forget almost ALL Walt Disney World Resort Hotels offer a food court of some sort and Disney changes things up sometimes based on crowds so you may find a coffee cart or that you can grab a quick service meal in places that you though were only snackable!  While some require you to leave your hotel to grab a meal, this is an important fact to check up on before you plan your meals!

Happy Touring (& eating)!

Why I Love Epcot’s Mouse Gears

jan26 300x400 Mouse Gear: Your Disney Shopping Headquarters at Epcot %tag

By Melissa L.

By far, my favorite shop in all of Epcot and arguably all of the Walt Disney World parks is Mouse Gear.  It is the largest shop in Epcot and really I find myself wanting to skip Downtown Disney when I am staying in the Epcot Resort Area since you can find a little bit of everything here!  My favorite Mouse Gear story came this Fall when I decided to grab two vinylmations: Star Wars (hoping for Darth Vader) and Pirates (hoping for Captain Jack) and as luck and Disney magic would have it I scored both!

Without the Hollywood Boulevard or Main Street shop set up this is vital to Epcot and worth a trip of its own! The store is set up in sections as you wind your way through.  You will find:

  • All kinds of toys for kids of all ages
  • Disney World Souvenirs (including dated)
  • Apparel for the entire family (including a large ear hat section)
  • Disney Trading Pins & Vinylmation
  • Candy, Snacks, and novelty foods
  • Picture frames and Collectibles
  • Seasonal merchandise
  • Epcot themed merchandise and apparel
  • Cookware and Kitchenware
  • And much more!

While the areas change and don’t always have the largest selection on property you will find this is an Epcot one stop shop! There are also great ways to save here:

  • Disney Visa Cardmembers can enjoy their 10% discount on most merchandise orders $50 or more here
  • During busy times it has been reported that quick service dining receipts have also featured 10% off coupons

With so many specialty shops in the World Showcase, Land, Seas, and Imagination pavilions this is a great stop for a less crowded store with lots of selection!

Have you ever been to Mouse Gears, what do you think? Let me know in the comments below!
